| What To Look For In Your Breeder |
| * I have been asked so many times what one should look for in a reputable dog breeder. With all the scams online, backyard breeders, puppy mills and un educated people who get into breeding and raising dogs I feel it necessary to post a bit of info about reputable breeders here this is our opinion, opinions will vary from person to person on this: * When you are browsing the web first thing you need to look at is how much time and effort one put into the web site and how up to date it is, there should be info about the breeds the breeder is raising, show pictures, kennel pictures, pictures of the breeders residence, client testimonials, nothing hidden to you the perspective client. Any honest reputable breeder will be more than happy to show you how your perspective puppy will be raised and where. ALL PUPPIES should be raised in a home not in a kennel. HUGE! Otherwise odds are your puppy will not be social, and not socialized during a very critical period can never be fully changed. When looking at a web site or breeder you want to be sure that the breeder does not have over two breeds, I believe personally any more than that there is no way one can possibly focus. Any more two breeds should only be done by breeders who can devote full time to the dogs on a daily basis, and have someone who can look after the needs of the dogs on days they can't give FULL TIME 365! GOOGLE your perspective breeders kennel name and name to look for multiple breeds of dogs that breeder may be trying to hide from you. Often Back yard breeders will have multiple web sites with other breeds to throw you off if you find this HUGE RED FLAG! * Look for breeders who practice what they preach. Often when a breeder touts health testing and has to talk about it and anounce it to the world beware this can be a red flag For I know many who may test and screen to use this as a selling tool, but then do nothing with the result of the test or found result, when something comes up with a dog they own they try to justify breeding the equivical dog or dog with a issue found by justifying it, but yet tout that they are screening and testing. If they are testing they need to be willing to do something with that knowledge if found besides justifying it when a problem does arise.. *Often breeders are quick to put down other fellow breeders, this is a red flag. Many times these breeders are not being ethical themselves and try to make up for it by putting down other breeders, your breeder should just offer you things to look for in a breeder, not putting down and naming breeders Jelousy is huge in the dog world so beware. You start doing well and breeders will suddenly have much negative to say. * Look for a breeder who you can ask questions to about genetics of specific health issues. Breeders breeding should have knowledge of this with the breeds they are raising. To be a effective breeder health testing/screening is not all that is involved you have to have knowledge of how the genes work many breeders think a good result of the sire and dam and no issues from further offspring, BINGO not the case with many health issues and defects Many are what we call POLYGENETIC! Feel free to ask me about this~ Don't let health testing assure you that your dog will not have issues wish it were true, but not the case~ NOW PLL Muntant Gene Testing is a must for this is a actual gene we can test for that is the cause of genetic PLL in miniature bull terriers Make sure you breeder is not just PLL GENE testing but knows how to breed to not created at risk dogs with the results of the Gene testing on each Miniature Bull Terrier~One Parent must Be a CLEAR * Look for a breeder wiling to spend time talking wth you by phone and email. A good breeder wants to place dogs in the best situation for the puppy/dog. No excuse for a breeder not getting back to you, conversation is very important. They should tell you both good and bad about the breeds they have and know the AKC standard set for the breed and be breeding towards that standard with every breeding. With goals in mind from each specific mating. They should be able to tell you why they did that cross and what they hope to produce from that mating. Each dog should compliment each other. Many factors like, bites , kidney , heart etc. are polygenetic meaning even with two parents with perfect bites the bites, can go off and dogs with bad bites may produce a dog with a perfect bite! I have seen this many times. So look for a breeder who knows what and why they are breeding and what they may be getting from that mating. Ask your breeder why they breed: Answer should be to produce my next show prospect and to move forward with this breed. If not they are a back yard breeder and chances are they are not a breeder in it for the benifit of the breed. * Any reputable breeder will not just hand out breeding rights to just anyone. Look for a breeder who is protecting the breed they raise, who will only place dogs with educated reputable proven breeders as show prospects or full akc. If they are selling the dogs in the litter all with full akc walk away. Also you will get a contract with some sort of Health Guarantee *Any reputable breeder will be very careful when anyone wants to come to the facility as to make sure you do not go to any other breeders before your visit, your perspective breeder should let you visit but with stipulations. Beware of breeders who only sell online or want to meet you somewhere and will not let you pick the pup up in person. *Any reputable breeder should have a viewable show history you can google online. Most all dog shows are public record and can easily be found by googling your breeders name and names of the dogs they have they are showing. *Reputable breeders can be found in every breed of dog all will be honest about the breed both good and bad. A true breeding program includes several dogs not just a couple or they are just breeding. You need to have options if you are really trying to compliment, excell and improve the breed and to have a real breeding program.. I hope this gives some insite for those looking. Reguardless if you get a dog or not from me I am more than willing to talk with you and help you in your search for either breed in locating a dog for you~ Spotlight Kennels~ |
